Algae is a loose definition that encompasses organisms from the phylums of Protista, Eubacteria, and Archaebacteria.   To grow algae you will need:

  1. A substrate to grow (such as water, in a container)
  2. An energy source (such as a light, check out our info on light)
  3. A supply of nutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphorus)  Nutrient recipes are linked here.
  4. A way to mix the culture (air bubbles, or a by shaking the culture yourself)
  5. Algae cells to culture
