Energy Flow and Trophic Transfer

Follow energy from algae to the animals that eat them.

Students estimate how much algae and how much brine shrimp are in a culture. They use those numbers to calculate how much is passed from one level to the next. The results are estimates, and the lab treats them that way.

What students do

Students estimate algae biomass and brine shrimp biomass in the same culture. They calculate transfer efficiency between the two levels. They compare their number with the textbook rule of thumb and discuss why it differs.
