Marine Biology and Oceanography
Marine algae and brine shrimp for plankton, food webs and coastal water quality.
Students work with marine algae and brine shrimp, the base of many ocean food webs. They follow energy up a trophic level, see what nutrient runoff does to a culture and isolate marine algae strains on plates.

Where it fits
How our labs fit this course
Plankton and food webs
Where it fits: the plankton and marine food web part of the course.
What the lab does: students estimate algae and brine shrimp biomass and calculate transfer efficiency.
Coastal water quality
Where it fits: the human impact and coastal pollution part of the course.
What the lab does: students add nutrients to cultures and track the bloom.
Phytoplankton diversity
Where it fits: any lab on marine microbes or phytoplankton.
What the lab does: students isolate single strains from a mixed marine sample.
