High School, grades 9 to 12
Chemistry in the Earth System (California)
pH, equilibrium and carbon you can watch change color.
Students use living algae beads and an indicator to watch pH shift as carbon dioxide dissolves and is used up. They connect it to ocean acidification, the carbon cycle and the chemistry of burning fuels.

Where it fits
How our labs fit this course
pH and equilibrium
Where it fits: California's Chemistry in the Earth System course, pH and chemical equilibrium, including ocean acidification.
What the kit does: Algae beads in an indicator solution change color as carbon dioxide is added or taken up, so students can see the carbonate equilibrium shift.
Combustion and the carbon cycle
Where it fits: Combustion and the carbon cycle.
What the kit does: Students look at algae as a source of fuel and track where carbon goes. Honest fit: partial. The kit does not burn anything, so combustion is discussed, not measured.
