Algae in the ocean fixes more carbon dioxide than all the plants on the land.

College Lab

College and University

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

Watch living algae take up and give off carbon dioxide.

Students put algae beads in an indicator solution and set them in light and in dark. The indicator color tracks carbon dioxide going in and out. Students read the change over time and calculate rates for photosynthesis and respiration.

What students do

Students set algae beads in light and dark in a carbon dioxide indicator. They record the color change over time. They turn those readings into rates and compare net photosynthesis with respiration.
