Algae in the ocean fixes more carbon dioxide than all the plants on the land.

High School Physical Science

Ocean Acidification and Chemical Equilibrium

Watch algae change the pH of water.

Students put Algae Beads in an indicator solution. As the algae take up carbon dioxide, the color shifts and shows the pH changing.

Ocean Acidification and Chemical Equilibrium

How the lab meets it

What students do that satisfies the standard

Grades 9-12

NGSS HS-PS1-6

Standard: Refine the design of a chemical system by specifying a change in conditions that would produce increased amounts of products at equilibrium.

What the kit does: Students change light or carbon dioxide and see the equilibrium shift.

Honest fit: partial. Algae shift pH by taking up carbon dioxide and an indicator shows the shift, but students do not redesign the system.
