Algae as Biofuel and Bioproduct

Can algae help power the world?

Students grow an algae culture and measure how fast it makes biomass. They use that yield to reason about algae as fuel and other products.

How the lab meets it

What students do that satisfies the standard

Grades 9-12

NGSS HS-ETS1-2

Standard: Design a solution to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable problems that can be solved through engineering.

What the kit does: Students break the fuel problem into parts they can test, starting with growth.

Honest fit: partial. No dedicated kit yet, students use a growing culture to reason about yield.

Grades 9-12

NGSS HS-ESS3-1

Standard: Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the availability of natural resources, occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate have influenced human activity.

What the kit does: Students connect algae yield to resource use and human needs.
