High School Life Science
Bioprospecting and Microbial Diversity
One drop of pond or sea water holds more life than you think.
Students collect a water sample, grow it out, and isolate the algae they find. They sort and count what is there and compare samples.

How the lab meets it
What students do that satisfies the standard
NGSS HS-LS4-5
Standard: Evaluate the evidence supporting claims that changes in environmental conditions may result in: (1) increases in the number of individuals of some species, (2) the emergence of new species over time, and (3) the extinction of other species.
What the kit does: Students compare the organisms that grow from samples taken under different conditions.
Honest fit: partial. The lab shows diversity in a sample rather than species outcomes over time.
