Algae Beads - Investigating Peroxidase Activity
This lab investigates enzyme activity using algae beads that contain peroxidase, focusing on how substrate concentration influences reaction rate. Students create a series of hydrogen peroxide dilutions, then measure how long it takes for algae beads to rise as oxygen gas is produced during the enzymatic breakdown of peroxide. By collecting and graphing time data against concentration, students analyze patterns, determine reaction order, and apply mathematical tools such as logarithmic relationships to interpret results. The activity builds skills in experimental design, data analysis, and modeling while reinforcing core concepts of enzyme function, catalysis, and the relationship between cellular processes and environmental factors.
